Theme of the anniversary year 1999

Extraordinarily curious he was, the German poet and thinker.
He was fascinated by his immediate environment as well as by what was distant, his interest was attracted by the familiar as much as by the unknown.
He coined the term ´Weltliteratur`, i e. world literature. He transcended geographic and cultural borders.
In the awareness of this the city of Frankfurt celebrates his 250^th birthday in 1999.
